  1. Why don't the video clips play properly?
There can be many reasons for video clips to play improperly. Here are some possible causes:
    • The computer's processor is too slow. The recommended minumum is 266MHz. The lower quality video in the 166mhz version of Pilote Moi has been designed to help users of lower specification machines.
    • The CD-ROM drive's read speed is too low. The recommended minimum is quad-speed, or 4x.
    • Windows is not optimizing the CD-ROM's data access.
To check the size of your CD-ROM's supplemental cache on Windows 98 or ME, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties from the pop-up menu. From the System Properties window that pops up, select the Performance tab at the top and then click on the File System button, under the Advanced settings section. In the File System Properties window that pops up, select the CD-ROM tab at the top. In the Settings section, you are able to set the Supplemental cache size and optimize the access pattern for the CD-ROM drive. It is recommended that the supplemental cache size is set to Large and that you optimize the access pattern for Quad-speed or higher
    • The computer has less than 64MB of RAM. Although Pilote Moi will function with less than 64MB of RAM installed in your machine, Windows will rely more heavily on virtual memory and hence play the video clips less smoothly.
    • The surface of the CD is damaged or not clean. The video clips need to run directly from the CD, so imperfections on the disc can upset playback.

  2. Why doesn't my Pilote CD start by itself?
It may be that the Autorun facility has been turned off. This may be due to security settings on your machine. For instance, if you only have limited access privileges as a user, you may need to log in as an administrator to enable the Autorun facility. By creating a Shortcut to the Pilote CD-ROM, you should be able to start the CD-ROM even with limited privileges.

To create a Shortcut to the CD-ROM, double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. Ensure that the CD-ROM is in the drive. Drag the CD icon from the My Computer window to the desktop using the right mouse button. Select Create Shortcut Here from the pop-up menu. If you drag the CD icon to the desktop using the left mouse button, an alert box will usually ask you if you want to create a shortcut, rather than copying the CD-ROM to your desktop.

To enable the Autorun facility on Windows 98 or ME, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties from the pop-up menu. From the System Properties window that pops up, select the Device Manager tab at the top. Locate your CD-ROM device in the list by selecting the View devices by type option at the top and then locating the CDROM branch. To expand the CDROM branch, click on the plus (+) sign on its left. Double-click on your CD-ROM's name to view its Properties window. In the Properties window that pops up, select the Settings tab from the top. For the Autorun facility to be enabled on the drive, the checkbox labelled Auto insert notification, under the Options section, needs to be set by checking the box and clicking on the OK button.

  3. Why doesn't the sound play in time with the video?
This usually happens for one of the following reasons:
    • The computer's processor is too slow. The recommended minumum is 266MHz. Try using the 166mhz version of the Pilote CD.
    • The CD-ROM drive's read speed is too low. The recommended minimum is quad-speed, or 4x.
    • The computer has less than 64MB of RAM.
See note 1 for more details.
    • The computer may suffer from what are known as 'memory leaks'. In this case, quitting Pilote Moi and then restarting it can often remedy the problem.

  4. How do I print from Pilote Moi?
There is no printing functionality built into Pilote Moi. However, you can use the built-in screen capture/printing facility of Windows or Macintosh.

For Windows, pressing the Print Screen button on the keyboard will copy the screen to the clipboard. Using most graphics software packages, you can then paste the image from the clipboard.

For Macintosh, the combination of Command-Shift-3 on the keyboard will save the screen image to a file on your local disc, named "Picture 1".

  5. How can I my Pilote CD on a network?
Pilote CDs were not originally designed to run on a network due to the high demands of video playback. Each user should be running a separate disc on their own machine. However, certain networks can support the required data rate. If you are running a RM Connect Network in your school, an enabler for RM Connect 2.4 and 3.x is now available. An enabler is also available for Windows 2000 Server. Please contact KETV to discuss your requirements. Pilote Moi requires QuickTime to be installed on each machine running Pilote Moi. We have included a QuickTime installer package on the disc for system adminstrators along with notes for RM Networks machines.

  6. Why does it want to install QuickTime again, even though I've already installed it and restarted the computer?
This is likely to be due to access privileges on your computer, or because you are on a network. Consult your system administrator or see note 5.

  7. Why am I having trouble starting Pilote Moi in Windows 2000, ME or XP?
This may be due to the installation of QuickTime. First, try running the QuickTime installer found on this CD-ROM manually.
More recent versions of QuickTime will also be available from http://www.apple.com

  8. How do I use my Pilote CD on a Macintosh?
Pillote Moi should run quite happily on any Macintosh running system 8.0 or later. Firstly ensure you have QuickTime 4.0 or later installed and then simply double-click the StartPiloteMoi icon to launch the program. You will find the Macintosh version of the QuickTime 5 installer in the folder called Data on this CD-ROM. Later versions of the Pilote CDs include both Classic and Mac OSX versions.

  9. How do I pause the video clips?
Along the bottom edge of each video clip you should find controls to pause, play, step forward and backward as well as volume control. You can also control the video clip by dragging the progress slider or clicking anywhere along the progress bar.

  10. How can I use my Pilote CD without installing QuickTime, even though it says I need it?
This CD-ROM will simply not run unless QuickTime version 4.0 or later is installed on the computer.

  11. How do I determine whether I have QuickTime already installed?
On a PC, go to the Start menu and check your Control Panel under the Settings menu. If you have QuickTime installed, there should be QuickTime components in your Control Panel. Open the QuickTime control panel to see which version you have.
On a Macintosh (system 8 or 9) find the QuickTime control panel in the Control Panels on the Apple Menu.
When you first run Pilote Moi it will check for you. On Windows 95 and 98 it will also automatically run the QuickTime installer if you so wish. For later operating systems, please find the QuickTime 5 installer on this disc or later versions available from http://www.apple.com.

  12. How do I repeat the question during a game?
Most games have the facility to repeat the question. On some games Pilote's head appears in the corner. Simply click him to repeat the question. On the other games try exploring elsewhere (like the child's face) to find the hidden 'question encore' button.

  13. How can I record my scores?
There is no way of recording scores built in to Pilote Moi. However, you could use the built-in screen capture/printing facility of Windows or Macintosh, if appropriate. See note 4. Pilote Mon Ecole does record your score when you have given 10 correct answers.

  14. Why can't I hear any sound?
Firstly ensure that your speakers are connected correctly and switched on. Can you hear other sounds through your speakers?
Ensure that your sound has not been muted accidentally. Right click the small speaker icon on the bottom right of your screen to check sound settings.

  15. Where do I find the Resources?
You will find it in the folder called Resources on the CD-ROM. To prevent the CD autostarting, right click the CD to explore it. If you simply want access to the Permis de Conduire (driving license) simply click here.

  16. How do I get more copies of the CD-ROM?

  18. What if I can't find the solution to my problem here?
Many issues are related to your computer or network configuration and your usual support channels should be able to help you. Pilote Languages and KETV are unable to offer instant technical support but if you would care to e-mail our developers at support@pilotelanguages.com, they will try to suggest a way forward.

  19. When I double click on the CD to try and access resource files it keeps starting Pilote. How do I stop that?
Double clicking on the CD icon will ‘Autorun’ the early (v2.0) Pilote Moi application. If you right click on the CD icon you will be able to ‘Explore’ the CD and find the resources and installers.

  20. When I try and install QuickTime it wants a registration number?
The registration number is only required if you wish to install the Pro version of the Apple’s QuickTime software. For the purposes of using the Pilote CD products, the ‘Minimum’ install is all you need so just click ‘next’ when you reach this screen.

  21. Pilote Moi will not run on my Apple Macintosh. It says it cannot locate the CD-Rom.
Unfortunately there was an authentication fault with the original batch of Pilote Moi CD-Roms. To rectify this problem, simply download this replacement and place it on the desktop of each computer. If you use this replacement application (you will still need the original CD in the CD drive) it should work fine.

  22. Why when I run the ‘Network Enabler’ does it ask for the original disc?
When dragging the appropriate enabler to your desktop please ensure you drag a copy by using the right mouse button. Using the left mouse button simply creates a shortcut to the enabler.

  23. Why do the fonts go all strange on Windows NT/2000/XP?
We are aware of instances (on networks particularly) where restricted privileges for users can prevent early (v2.0) Pilote Moi from using the embedded font. If when logging in as admin it resolves the problem you can then perhaps determine what privileges you need to allow your normal users. Later versions (v2.1 or later) should not have this problem.

  24. Why do I get an installation error message when I try to run the network enabled version of Pilote Moi or Mon Ecole on an RM Community Connect 3 network?
This is probably due to a permissions problem introduced by RM when they introduced Service Release 2. The CC3 network used to allow read access to pupils on the Q drive and they changed the privileges. The network enabler needs read only access to the Q drive. You should find if you allow your pupil users access to the Q drive it should all work as expected. You will probably find it works fine when logged in as admin and this is why.

  25. Why do I get an "Error 17: Unable to connect to server" error message when I try to activate the Network Version of Pilote Ma Ville?
Before using Pilote Network, it is necessary to activate your license number which requires an active internet connection. If the software has a problem doing this, it wil return this error message. This error also appears if you are using a Proxy Server with which to access the internet. The first thing to do is to ensure that your network connection is configured correctly and that you can browse the internet without trouble. If you continue to have problems, it is likely your connection to the internet is through a Proxy Server.

If you are able to configure your Proxy Server, you will need to allow access to http://www.pilotelanguages.com using Port 80. Refer to your Proxy Server documentation on how to perform this task.

If for security reasons this is not possible, there is a method to configure Pilote Network to use your Proxy Server to connect to the internet. There is a file located in the /license directory of the Pilote Network Program Files that is called 'proxy.ini'. Open this file up and edit the two properties - ProxyServer and ProxyPort. Fill in the relevant details for your Proxy Server, after each property - an example would be 'ProxyServer=123.456.789.0'. Save the file and re-start Pilote Network to begin authentication using your Proxy Server.

If you continue to have problems activating your Pilote Network software, contact our Customer Service team at
