Bautizos
– Christenings
Spain has a reputation as a "Catholic" country and people
like to have their babies baptised in church at naming ceremony.
The Catholic tradition means many people are
called Jesus or Marie as well as another name. Some names from films
and football are also beginning to influence what children are called.
Children have their father’s and their mother’s surnames.
Cumpleaños – Birthdays
Just as in the UK, children have a celebration with school friends,
which can be a party at home, or a trip out to a burger restaurant
or an organised leisure centre. There would be savoury food, followed
by cake and sweets. The highlight is blowing out the candles on
the cake. The tradition of pulling the birthday child’s ear
is common all over Spain; one pull for every year. Birthday cards
are not normal, especially if you see the person all the time. You
might possibly get them from people who live away but it is not
usual. ¡Feliz Cumpleaños!
Onomástica (Día del santo) – Fete
day
If you are named after a saint you appreciate it if your friends
wish you a Happy Saint’s Day on that Saint’s day.
Primera Comunión – Holy Communion
Children have a celebration meal with their family when they go
to church and take communion for the first time.
Bodas – Marriages
Guests are invited to the wedding and expect a meal. The guests
should bring a present. The present should exceed the cost of the
meal. When they get married women keep their own surname. Sons and
daughters are named with both surnames.
